1. Shut off the water
Main shutoff valve — near the meter, where the line enters the house, or in the garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops. This single step prevents most emergency water damage.
2. Relieve the pressure
Open a faucet at the lowest point in the house to drain the lines. If the water heater is involved, shut off its supply and — for gas units — turn the gas control to pilot or off.
3. Protect & document
Move valuables, electronics, and rugs out of the water's path. Take photos and video of everything — your insurance adjuster will thank you.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Anything actively damaging your home or unsafe: a burst pipe, a major leak you can't stop, sewage backing up into the house, no water at all, a gas smell near gas lines, or a water heater leaking heavily. A dripping faucet or slow drain can wait for a normal appointment — water pouring through a ceiling cannot.
What should I do before you arrive?
Shut off the water first: the main shutoff valve is usually near your water meter or where the line enters the house — turn it clockwise to close. Open a faucet at the lowest point to drain pressure. For a gas smell, don't touch anything electrical: leave the house and call your gas utility, then us. Move valuables out of the water's path and snap photos for insurance.
Do you charge extra for emergency calls?
Urgent after-hours work does carry an emergency service rate — we'll tell you exactly what it is before we dispatch, so there are no surprises when the truck rolls. During normal business hours, urgent calls are handled at standard rates whenever we can fit them in.
Where is my main water shutoff valve?
Most Central Texas homes have it in one of three places: at the water meter box near the street, on an exterior wall where the line enters the house, or in the garage. It's worth finding it today — during an actual emergency is the worst time to go hunting. If you can't find yours, we'll show you on our next visit.
Can I prevent plumbing emergencies?
Many of them, yes. Know where your shutoffs are, insulate exposed pipes before hard freezes (see our winter freeze protection guide), replace aging supply hoses on washers and toilets, and don't ignore small leaks — the 'tiny' drip under the sink is how ceilings get ruined. Annual checkups catch most emergencies before they start.
